From STEM to STEAM

You have probably heard of STEM, the acronym used for the interrelated disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

But perhaps you are less familiar with a more recent addition to the STEM family—the arts, transforming STEM into STEAM.

Increasingly, many schools are embracing a STEAM-focused educational model and curriculum that seeks to integrate the humanities, language, and the creative and visual arts into the more traditional study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As examples of STEAM in action, students might explore geometry through the creation of paper sculptures or study the principles of sound waves by playing a musical instrument.

Proponents of STEAM argue that this educational approach creates a richer, more diverse learning environment that extends creative and critical thinking while also sharpening collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills. In addition, STEAM-focussed curricula can be more inclusive, offering an accessible entry point into traditional STEM learning for students who are not as confident in math or science.

At Forest Hill Tutoring, we have extensive experience supporting students studying within a STEAM framework and can personally attest to the value of such interdisciplinary learning.
